Bong vs. Water Pipe — What’s the Difference?

The term water pipe is an umbrella term that encompasses any smoking pipe that utilizes water to cool down smoke. By definition, water pipes technically include bongs, dab rigs, and bubblers.

So if everything above is a water pipe, how can you tell the difference? Bongs are best identified for their designated use with cannabis, as opposed to dab rigs which are intended for use with concentrates.

Bongs differ from bubblers in that they are typically held with two hands and can be identified by their removable downstems and bowl pieces. Upright bubblers and mini bongs are the exception and blur the line between the two, functioning as tiny hybrids with the portability of a bubbler and the classic function of a bong.

Understanding these differences is helpful if you’re exploring our collection of bongs for sale online and deciding which style of water pipe best fits your lifestyle.

Complete History of Bongs:

Bongs have a long, global history that stretches back thousands of years. Early versions appeared across Asia, Persia, and Africa, where people handmade water pipes from bamboo, clay, and natural gourds to cool and filter smoke. These ancient legends were using early bongs to smoke all kinds of herbs, including cannabis, tobacco, and even opium, long before modern glass existed. Over time, these simple tools evolved into the ceramic and glass designs that paved the way for the modern bongs we see today.

Origin of Early Use in Asia, Persia & Africa

Archaeological evidence links early waterpipes to ancient China, Persia, Laos, and several regions throughout Africa. Early designs were often carved from bamboo, shaped from clay, or made from natural gourds. Simple, functional tools created long before glassmaking became widespread.

The Evolution of Widespread Bong Use

As smoking traditions spread across continents, the water pipe design evolved with them. Different regions adopted unique materials and construction techniques, transitioning from bamboo cylinders to more refined ceramic pieces. These early designs set the foundation for the cooling and filtration principles modern bongs still rely on today.

The Rise of Glass & Modern Design

By the 20th century, glass took over as the material of choice for water pipes, giving us the glass bongs we know and love today. Glassblowers began experimenting with new shapes, thicker walls, ice catchers, and intricate percolators, innovations that weren’t possible with bamboo or ceramic. Prized for their durability, heat resistance, and clean, flavorful pulls, glass bongs were officially here to stay. This shift marked the beginning of the modern bong era, where artistry and performance go hand in hand.

Timeless Function, Modern Performance

Even with all the changes, the purpose of a bong hasn’t changed since ancient times: use water to cool and filter smoke for smoother hits, bigger pulls, and a more enjoyable experience than any dry pipe can offer.

What to Consider When Buying a Bong:

Shopping bongs for sale online means choosing the size, material, and features that match your smoking style. The right bong should feel comfortable to use, easy to maintain, and deliver the type of hit you prefer (smooth, powerful, or somewhere in between). Below are the two biggest factors to keep in mind when picking out your next water pipe.

Choosing the Right Size

Bongs come in all shapes and sizes, and size definitely matters. The height you choose has a huge impact on airflow, portability, and how intense each hit feels.

Mini Bongs (8 inches tall or less)

These compact bongs are great for beginners, casual smokers, and anyone who values portability. They’re easy to handle, easy to clean, and perfect for smaller, more controlled hits. If you're trying your first bong and upgrading from a hand pipe, a mini bong is a comfortable step up.

Standard Bongs (9-14 inches tall)

This is the sweet spot for most smokers. Standard-size bongs between 9”-14” inches tall offer the perfect balance of smoothness and power, with enough room for added features like percs, ice catchers, and diffuser downstems. If you want a water pipe that delivers without feeling overwhelmed, this is your lane.

Large Bongs (15 inches and taller)

For big-lung pros only. Large bongs deliver massive, dense clouds and usually come with more advanced filtration. They’re less portable but unmatched for heavy pulls and group sessions. If you want maximum cooling power and huge rips, the bigger the better.

Choosing the Right Material

The material of your bong will affect durability, flavor, maintenance, and overall performance. Most shoppers browsing glass bongs or bongs for sale online will be comparing these options below.

Borosilicate Glass Bongs

The gold standard. Glass bongs offer clean flavor, heat resistance, and clear glass gives you a window to all the action inside. Percolators are also more common in glass bongs, which provide added filtration and smoother hits. Borosilicate glass doesn’t affect taste and is easy to clean, making it the most popular material for everyday use.

Silicone Bongs

Nearly indestructible and great for travel, Silicone bongs are flexible, lightweight, and perfect for smokers who drop everything or need a portable setup. While these water pipes don’t offer the same flavor purity as a glass bong, silicone is unbeatable for durability.

Ceramic Bongs

Think functional artwork. Ceramic bongs often look like decor pieces, hold heat well, and deliver smooth hits thanks to their thicker walls. The tradeoff is durability (ceramics break more easily than glass) and they’re usually heavier too.

Acrylic Bongs & Other Materials

If you’re on a budget, acrylic bongs offer a lightweight, low-cost way to try water pipes. Gas mask bongs often have acrylic water pipes attached. They’re durable and colorful, but don’t deliver the same smoothness or clean flavor as glass or ceramic.

Types of Bongs for Sale:

Choosing a bong isn’t just about size or color. It’s about finding the airflow, filtration style, and overall vibe that fits the way you want to smoke. There are many different types of bongs for sale, and they can be categorized based on the build and functionality of the piece. Most water pipes can be listed under multiple categories, but understanding each type can help you hone in on the exact piece for you.

Below are the most common types you'll come across while shopping bongs for sale online, each offering its own mix of smoothness, power, and personality.

Beaker Bongs:

Beaker bongs are the dependable, no-nonsense pieces of the water pipe world, like the friend who never flakes and always has a lighter. They are one of the most popular and beginner-friendly designs, known for their wide base, sturdy feel, and reliable performance. Their beaker-shaped body looks like it came straight out of a chemistry lab, and holds more water than other designs for better cooling and larger, thicker clouds.

The wide base keeps them stable, the big chamber delivers satisfying hits, and cleanup is usually straightforward. Beaker bongs are the “set it on the table and it won’t fall over” choice. It’s a simple design that is easy to use and easy to love.

Straight Tube Bongs:

A straight tube bong keeps things simple, clean, and efficient. Their tall, cylindrical design sends smoke directly from the base to the mouthpiece, giving you fast, powerful pulls with minimal drag. They’re easy to handle, easy to clear, and perfect for smokers who want straightforward performance without extra bells and whistles.

The slim, upright shape also makes straight tubes easier to clean than bulkier water pipes, and their direct airflow gives you more control over the size and intensity of every hit. Most have built-in ice catchers, which is always an added bonus. If you want a simple design with big results, straight tube bongs will be your “why did I take that big of a hit, someone hold my hand” kind of piece.

Fat Can / Chamber Bongs:

Fat can bongs cover a variety of water pipes that don’t quite fit the bill to be considered a straight tube or beaker bong. These chunky water pipes feature wide, oversized chambers that hold more water (and way more smoke) than your average straight tube. With a big central body and a slimmer neck, they deliver thick, milky pulls that feel dense, cool, and ridiculously satisfying.

Because the chamber is so spacious, fat can bongs often house percolators right in the middle, giving your smoke extra filtration and cooling power before it ever reaches your lungs. They're the upgrade for smokers who want smoother hits with a unique design. Once you take a rip from a fat can bong, you’ll understand why these things are known for producing clouds so heavy they should probably come with a weather advisory.

Themed Bongs:

Themed bongs take the idea of a water pipe and turn it into pure art. These are the cool bongs that look like animals, food, cartoon characters, or everyday objects. They’re the kind of pieces that make people stop mid-sentence and immediately ask, “Hold on… is that actually a bong?”

Designed to be both functional and fun, themed bongs bring personality to every session. They hit like regular bongs, but the designs add an extra element of enjoyment and make them perfect for display. Whether you want something cute, scary, trippy, or downright ridiculous, themed water pipes are some of the best cool bongs you can add to your collection.

Recycler Bongs:

Recycler bongs hit so cool and clean you will swear your piece has a PhD in airflow engineering. These intricate water pipes pull water through a loop of interconnected chambers, constantly cycling and filtering the smoke as you inhale. The result is unbelievably smooth, cool hits that feel cleaner than anything a standard bong can produce.

Because the water never sits still, recyclers keep the smoke fresh, prevent harshness, and deliver some of the most flavorful rips you can get. Recycler bongs look wild, function beautifully, and are absolutely worth adding to your collection if you want hits that make other bongs feel like amateur hour.

Gravity Bongs:

Gravity bongs are the “strap in and hope you cleared your schedule” kind of water pipe. Instead of relying on your inhale alone, they use gravity (or water displacement) to fill the chamber with dense, concentrated smoke that hits harder than anything else in the bong universe. Even seasoned smokers respect these things, and for good reason: they do not play around.

The classic homemade version uses a 2-liter plastic bottle and a bucket, but modern glass gravity bongs take the same concept and turn it into a smooth, classy, and way more controlled experience. No melted plastic, no nasty buckets of water, just pure, monster-sized clouds delivered with embarrassingly little effort.

If you’re searching for gravity bongs for sale, you’re in for massive smoke, minimal effort, and the kind of hit that makes people sit down even when they swore they didn’t need to.

Indestructible Bongs:

Indestructible bongs are exactly what they sound like. These rugged water pipes are made from materials that are almost impossible to break. They can survive drops, tips, spills, and full-blown “my friend knocked it off the table again” incidents. Silicone, metal, and acrylic builds make indestructible bongs ideal for smokers with pets, clumsy roommates, or a dangerous habit of leaving their piece on the edge of the counter.

Unlike glass water pipes, unbreakable bongs are built to take abuse without ever chipping, cracking, or shattering. You can toss one in a backpack, drop it on the ground, or accidentally kick it over during a late-night session, and it will keep on ripping like nothing happened.

Indestructible bongs are the ultimate peace of mind water pipes, strong enough to survive drops, dents, and whatever your weekend looks like.

Modular Bongs:

Modular bongs are for people who want to treat their water pipes like a customizable LEGO set. Built from multiple interchangeable parts, these pieces can be taken apart, rebuilt, upgraded, and cleaned with zero hassle. If you love tinkering or want a bong that evolves with your smoking style, modular designs are a dream.

Because each section of a modular bong twists or locks together, you can swap percs, change necks, adjust heights, and rebuild the whole thing after someone inevitably says, “Bro I think I put this on upside down.” They’re ultra-adaptable and perfect for smokers who want full control over airflow, cooling, and ease of cleaning.

Modular bongs are also the foundation of our Custom Bong Builder App, which lets you mix, match, and build your own setup right from your screen!

Bubble Base Bongs:

Bubble base bongs keep things classic with a rounded, globe-shaped bottom that holds more water than a straight tube while still keeping the piece stable like a beaker. The bubble chamber allows for increased airflow and smoother diffusion, giving each hit a softer, cooler feel without needing a complex percolator setup.

They function similarly to beaker bongs but trade the laboratory look for a more retro, 70s-inspired silhouette. Bubble base designs are great for smokers who want big, airy pulls and a comfortable grip, all in a shape that feels both nostalgic and easy to handle.

Dual Function Bongs:

Dual function bongs are for the brave, the chaotic, and the indecisive. These multitasking overachievers switch between dry herbs and concentrates like it’s nothing. Pack a bowl, drop a dab, ruin your evening, all without switching setups.

They’re perfect for smokers who like variety, don’t want multiple pieces cluttering their shelf, or want a single water pipe that can do it all during a group hang. Dual function bongs typically include a bowl piece for flower and a quartz banger for extracts to easily rotate between materials. Just attach the right accessory and you’re instantly running a whole new setup.

Percolator Bongs:

Percolator bongs are the upgrade you reach for when you want smoother, cooler, cleaner hits without upping your lung insurance premiums. Instead of pulling smoke straight through a single water chamber, percolator bongs diffuse it through intricate glass slits, holes, trees, discs, or entire architectural designs your science teacher would be proud of.

More diffusion = smaller bubbles = smoother pulls. It’s simple, glorious bong math. If you’ve ever hit a bong that felt like breathing cold air instead of lava, a percolator (perc for short) is why.

How do Bong Percolators Work?

Percs increase the surface area where smoke meets water, which cools down harshness and filters out more impurities. Think of them as built-in chillers that turn big rips into silky, low-effort inhales. Whether you prefer the clean snap of a honeycomb, the whirlpool spin of a turbine, or the layered filtration of a multi-chamber tower, there’s a perc style for every type of session.

How to Pick the Perfect Perc

We wrote an entire guide breaking down all the different percs, how they work, and which ones are best for different smoking styles. If you want to nerd out on percs, hit our blog and read Picking the Perfect Perc. It’s basically the cheat sheet every smooth-hit enthusiast should keep bookmarked.

How Many Percs Does a Bong Need?

One percolator is great. Two percs feel fancy. Three or four? That’s when your friends start asking, “Does this thing need a pilot’s license?”

More percolators generally mean cooler smoke and smoother hits. Just keep in mind: more percs = more cleaning. (Kinda worth it though.) We’ve got full lineups for every level of chaos:

Pick your level and send it.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do you use a bong?

Using a traditional bong is easier and less intimidating than it looks. To start, fill the base with enough water to submerge the bottom of the downstem. The entire function of a bong is to direct smoke through the water in the base, so you must add enough water to cover the holes and slits at the end of the downstem.

Pack your ground herb into the bowl, then place your mouth over the mouthpiece to create an airtight seal. Now light the bowl while slowly inhaling. As the bottom chamber fills with smoke, keep drawing until you're ready to take the hit. Then, remove the bowl (or lift the slide) off the downstem to clear the smoke inside the bong and inhale. The water helps cool and filter the smoke for smoother hits.

What is the best type of bong for me?

The best type of bong for you depends on your smoking needs and preferences. If you are looking for a simple design with more control of your draws, a straight tube bong would be a great choice. A beaker bong might be better if you want a more stable bong. Smaller bongs provide more manageable hits, while extra-large bongs require some experience.

Bongs can also have different built-in features, such as ice catchers or percolators designed for maximum cooling. How do I clean my bong?

Regularly cleaning your bong is essential to maintain functionality and keep your hits tasting clean. The best way to clean your bong is with a mix of high percentage isopropyl alcohol and rock salt. Alternatively, you can find a number of specialty cleaners and unique tools for cleaning a bong in our Keeping Clean collection.

First, you will want to remove the bowl and downstem from your bong. Then, fill your bong with alcohol and add some salt. Next, shake your bong vigorously to loosen any dirt and grime. Finally, rinse your bong with hot water and allow it to air dry or wipe it down with a cloth.

Can I buy a bong for sale online?

Bongs are available at many smoke shops and online headshops, including CaliConnected! Our curated collection of bongs for sale includes options for every budget, so you can shop confidently knowing you are getting a quality water pipe at a fair price.

Before purchasing a bong online, do some research to find the best deal and a reliable retailer. We are constantly running promotions and have a price-match guarantee to try and always bring you the best price available online.

Is buying a bong online safe?

There is still a lot of uncertainty about whether or not it is safe to buy a bong online. Buying your next bong, dab rig, or glass pipe from an online smoke shop is perfectly legal. Your name will not end up on some CIA list, and your information will not be shared with any government entity after buying a bong online.

You have nothing to fear if it’s your first time ordering a bong, vaporizer, or glass pipe online. A water pipe, vaporizer, or any other smoking device can not be deemed drug paraphernalia until it is used with an illegal substance. Simply ordering a bong online will not get you into trouble unless (and until) you are using it to break the law. For more info, read our blog post on the legality of buying a bong online

Does glass thickness matter in a bong?

Yes, glass thickness matters. Thicker glass bongs are sturdier, hold up better during daily use, and feel more solid in your hands. Most standard glass water pipes fall in the 3-5mm range, while premium heavy-wall pieces use 7-9mm tubing.

Thicker glass helps with durability, but it doesn’t make a bong “unbreakable.” The real weak points are always the joint, the base, and any thin attachments. You know how you can drop your phone a million times, but every once in a while, it hits that sweet spot and cracks in a million places? Even a 9mm bong can snap if it lands wrong.

If you want a good balance of strength, weight, and price, 5mm glass is the sweet spot for most smokers. If you want a tank that laughs at table bumps and late-night clumsiness, go for 7mm or 9mm heavy-wall designs.

Can I mix dry herbs and concentrates in the same bong?

Yes, you can use the same bong for dry herbs and concentrates, but you need the right attachments. A standard bong setup uses a bowl piece for flower, while concentrates require a quartz banger or dab nail.

If you choose to use both materials in the same waterpipe, it's recommended to clean the piece between sessions. Flower residue could ruin the flavor of your dabs, and leftover concentrate can clog your bowl or downstem. But by no means is it necessary, you can seamlessly switch back and forth without any worries.

Is buying a bong online illegal?

The idea that it is illegal to order bongs online is a common misconception. In 2003, the DEA carried out a large-scale operation known as Operation Pipe Dreams to shut down retailers selling drug paraphernalia, specifically glass pipes and bongs used for marijuana.

Operation Pipe Dreams landed infamous stoner Tommy Chong in handcuffs along with many other smoke shop owners and glassblowers. Ultimately, this targeted attack on the cannabis industry was deemed highly unsuccessful. Instead, laws were made infinitely more transparent for online head shops that, previous to 2003, operated in a cloud of confusion. Items like bongs are not considered “drug paraphernalia” by the federal government until there is concrete evidence that one planned to use said item illegally.

It’s not illegal to purchase bongs online, but there are rules.

Currently, federal law requires customers to be at least 18 years old, and online retailers to confirm the age of every customer by checking state-issued ID with an authorized service. The services that online head shops use to check IDs will not land your name on some DEA list and will remain entirely confidential.

The bottom line is that it is legal to order a bong online; however, depending on your state laws, packing your shiny new bong with weed could be illegal. Click here to read our full blog post on the legality of buying a bong online.
